I then attempted to follow procedure for a hard reset. I pushed in the reset button, held down the power-on switch, and then released the reset button after 2 seconds. I then waited for the message asking me if I wanted to erase my data. No message! I retried several times with no success.

You need to hold down both the power switch AND the reset button UNTIL the message appears. letting go before the message appear will only cause a soft reset.
