I have a 20M card for data and packages and have NEVER attempted to erase
and restore this. Have you done this, would you recommend to do this? Will
it speed up the card like it does on the Newton itself? If so, how do you
do it, since their have been so many dire warnings about resetting with the
card in place.

TIA for your advice....janis

Janis,

I do this regularly though not as religiously as I do the internal store. But I have now almost completely wean myself from desktop backups and rely entirely on Card to Card backups using SBM utilities. Never once failed me… touch wood.

As for desktop backup of Cards above 16 MB, I'll recommend the following procedures.

Allocate a memory size that's double your Card size and launch NCU right after a reboot.
This is the procedure.
1. Unmount and remove your card.
2. Backup Internal.
3. Make a copy of Internal and place it outside of the Backup Folder. This is your first generation internal backup.
4. Now insert Card and let it mount.
5. Backup through NCU with a copy of your Internal in the backup folder.
6. NCU now allows you to select Internal or Card. Select Card and backup.
7. Replace Internal backup in backup folder with the first generation Internal backup. You'll be warned that you're replacing a newer version. Ignore.
8. Next, hard reset Internal with Card removed.
9. Restore Internal.
10. Erase Card from the Card slip
11. Restore Card.
Now enjoy your tip top Newton that has just been given a new lease of life and some additional space recovered. That's it!

Steps 8 and 9 is optional, if you want to skip Internal restores. The reason for a copy of the Internal backup in the backup folder is to allow NCU to give you the option to backup Card only.

The first time is always nerve wrecking. But if it's any consolation,I do total backups and restores of my Internal and 24 MB Card through SBM every month for the last 6 months. Never lost any data once! And my Newt's performance is in tip top shape. You'll be glad you did.
