What does 'upgrade' mean? If going from 3.1 to 3.5 is considered an upgrade, then yes, I upgraded my Palm III. If upgrading means going from 3.x to 4.x, then yes, my HandEra 330 did take an upgrade. But I don't suppose the HandEra would qualify as a "Palm device".

I deliberately stuck with older versions because I'm pretty good and fast at inputting data w/ the original Grafitti (and I hate Grafitti2), much faster than tapping on the iPhone's keyboard. And I agree that Palm's (the company) track record is not one that would endear them to users.

HandEra (Trg) made better Palm devices than Palm, and Palm killed them by refusing to renew the licence for their OS. I feel about Palm like I feel about Apple for terminating the Newton.

Although, I did have a look at the Palm Pre, to be true; but I read it does not support traditional Palm data files (let alone applications), which is a deal-breaker for me. Might as well go for an iPhone, at least the syncing/backupping is a no-brainer.
