IBM didn't "sell their hardware business". They sold their PC division.

If Apple are so interested in keeping jobs in the US, they could start by
producing their PPC machines in the US, instead of abroad, as they do now
and have done for years.

Very little. Just look at the Pentium chips you see for sale. "Made in
Malaysia", "Made in Phillipines", "Made in [whatever]".
