Hi DJ,

let me start to answer your last post:

the GPS receiver needs to talk NMEA (as you can see from the programs
settings as well).
The beauty of this data format is that it is plain text.
So you should be able to use a monitor program on the Newt and see the NMEA
sentences like:
$PGALM .... (almanac information)
$PGRMI .... (sensor initialisation information)
and maybe others.

I think first you need to make sure that the hardware interface is ok -
of course this is kind of a nightmare if the handbook is in chinese...

Second you should make sure that both sides are talking at the same speed
and protocol.

Then it is the time to check the NMEA sentences sent by the receiver.
You normally need only one or two sentences, containing the actual position
information.
There is an NMEA $PGRMO command you can send to your receiver
enabling/disabling output sentences.

Finally if everything is fine, the GPS program should work nicely.

I used a monitor program (Hyperterminal) on my PC to figure out the correct
settings (my GPS mouse has a DB9 serial interface ...)

HTH

Cheers,
Johannes
