It would appear that you have Virtual Memory enabled, and set to twice
as much "real" memory as you have (hence they call it "virtual" memory).
It's using the hard disk as memory, it will swap out stuff from "real"
memory to the disk when it's not needed so that other stuff will fit,
then when it's needed again, something else that's not needed at the
moment will be taken from memory, stored on disk, and then what's needed
will be loaded in. If you're using a program that absolutely needs more
memory, you can crank up the amount in the Memory control panel (as much
as your hard drive has space for) and restart. The only drawback to
this, is that likely, most of what goes into memory is going to be
needed, so that leads to a lot of going back and forth between memory
and disk—very slow and not to mention, loss of drive space while you're
using it for virtual memory.
