The darkening of the screen is sort of well handled with Nick's AutoLCD
extension, which I've installed on all of my 2kx. It adjusts the contrast
according to the display temperature but it can't do much at the limits of
the slider range. It might happen that after large temperature changes and
additional hand adjustments the Newton goes blank and you have to know where
the original contrast slider was in extras to get something visible.

I've also used the Newton with GPSmap in my car and found that one has to
use a mount and fix it in such a way that the Newton can be operated while
driving. And of course the 7.5V have to be feeded from the accu as well as
the power for the GPS which is typically 100mA and more. If heating-up of
the display by direct sunlight is an issue then a special case with an air
fan might be worth a thought too. Cooling down the display only with a fan
is quickly done and effective and the surrounding air is "cold" enough even
at 35 deg C :-) assumig AutoLCD is working.
