There are four fingers which attach to the Newton main board and provide the
X-Y resistive output. Last time I looked at it I remember that it did not
seem that easy to remove it.

Yes at the time the Newton was developed, most large LCD screens were mode
of glass. If Apple is still doing repairs for US$180 it seems a great deal
if you have a broken screen. From what I've heard, some PDAs coming to the
market now use a less costly plastic LCD screen.
