You can't lose what you don't have, so in your case no harm was done.
Generally one should make one, better two backups prior to installing the
memory upgrade, as this will completely erase the eMate's memory --
except ROM, of course, where a good deal of its apps are stored (Newton
Works, for example). Stuff like NIE has to be re-installed, though.
