Struck a similar problem last year when I tapped the wrong line in the
routing slip and attempted to forward an entire digest (and they were very
big then) instead of replying to the highlighted quote. I had to reformat
the card but it resisted all attempts to do so in my Newton. None of the
methods known to me or suggested by others worked (including such things as
inserting the card with the prefs roll open). If the Newton booted with the
card in place, it would not allow me to remove it (insisting that there were
packages in use, although none had loaded and none of the data on it was
accessible) but the Newton would not recognise it if it was later inserted.

I had to put the card in another handheld to reformat it. Since then, it has
been fine.
