I too am lucky enough to have a large handful of eMates as part of
technology at the school where I work.

In cases such as these, it's easiest (and best in my opinion) to skip the
troubleshooting rigmarole and just brain wipe them. Follow these steps:

1. If there's a storage card in the eMate, prepare it for ejection
(you'll probably want to grab a utility for this, like Card Eject,
available at http://www.sbm.nu). Use Newton Connection Utilities to move
Card Eject to the eMate. Using this utility will prevent any information
you have stored on the card from being corrupted or getting erased when
you eject the card.

2. Physically eject the card from the eMate.

3. Do a brain wipe: use a ballpoint pen to press and hold the Reset
button on the bottom of the eMate (for about 2 seconds, maybe longer)
while also holding the Power button down on the eMate; after a few seconds
the screen should go blank and you'll see the message: Erase all data?
Tap to confirm that this is what you want to do.

4. The eMate will then erase all its data and reboot itself.

And here's where the beauty of the eMates shines through: when it reboots
all the packages that came pre-installed on the eMate will have
reappeared, and things should work the way you want them to work.

I recently did this with the 30 eMates I'm in charge of. I actually
created the profile I wanted on one, backed it up to my Mac using Newton
Connection Utilities, then brainwiped the rest. After they were
brainwiped, I restored the backed-up profile onto each and voila, 30
identical eMates.

Please note that if you have anything saved on the eMate, or any packages
you've loaded since acquiring the eMate, will be lost with the brain wipe.

Stick with Works- it's a very, very capable word
processor/spreadsheet/drawing program/scientific calculator.

Hope this helps; email me off list if you need more help.
