I have always used Letter mode and this is where alt.rec... is in its element. After what you wrote, I switched to Cursive mode and wrote about 50 words to test without problems. Recognition was much slower in cursive mode. Why not try writing a little slower and see if it works better.
I have 0.6a9 installed.
