WAS Re: NTLK Lookout 1.1 NOW Hacking - yet another debate...

David - (I think yr the guy looking into backlights-aren't u?) - yr doing a great service
to the Newton Community - and for that I thank you.
AND: yr entitled to yr opinion.
BUT: so am I.

If you want to take the 'Moral High Ground' - surely attempting to impose (as opposed to
discuss) your views on anyone - let alone an entire community - is straight-out wrong?

The world is _not_ - contrary to general opinion - Black and White: there ain't no sharp
delineating lines here.
-eg by the terms of the licensing agreement, I'd have to *purchase* (or otherwise obtain)
2 copies of NCU to run it on both my DTop/Laptop. In practice, given Apples' abandonment
(email me personally for a religious war on _this_ topic...) of the platform, its just
unobtainable - by the terms of the licence.
eg(2) - Farallon <sp?>'s still in business - but have stopped making the Enet cards that
suit the 2.1 OS Newts. Many people here are using other brands with a Hacked (or drivers
derived from hacks) version of Farallon's driver. According to your statements - this is
wrong.
Hmm - I would have agreed with you on this point whilst F'n were still making the
595-series cards. Once they stopped - the situation changed. So has my viewpoint.

I'm a developer myself. I _hate_ people ripping software. But if I make something
available, then move on, without any avenue for said persons to contact me/obtain such -
after establishing a market - then its my fault (NOT implying Farallon did here - I'm
talking general case). I should expect - and via my silence/disinterest, condone said
actions.

Other points below: but in summary - My opinion - what is 'right' today, may by necessity
need to be reviewed tomorrow. Hacking isn't always _BAD_ - sometimes is just a necessity.
Making 'absolute' statements (particularly phrased as fact) *is* wrong - and yes, I'm
aware of what I've just done :-)

Anyone wants to flame me on this - and yup, am more than keen to continue the discussion,
David - please contact me off-list via HackRant@xpress.net.nz (I own the domain, so yes,
this _is_ a valid address). Will copy anyone thats interested if thats what they wish
also.

Thanks for the bandwidth

-D

Good. You are entitled to do anything you want. Even Vehemently. But please remember that
you speak only for yourself. Not *all* the rest of us.

Why? This is _your_ opinion - surely it isn't 'cast in stone' somewhere? I don't recall
agreeing to this....? See above for 'shades of grey'.

> "Hacks are more wrong...??" How can they be more wrong? They are, by

Hmm - like to see that definition. Do what u want legally - if you are entitled to take an
'ethical' or 'moral' standpoint, so am I. Show me the 'moral proof' for this statement.
Otherwise Hacks are not necessarily "wrong" - just illegal - and _that_ depends on (at the
least) where in the world you live...

> Out of business does not mean "here take this software and steal it"!

Agreed. However, supplier/consumer responsibilities are a 2-way street.

It is your decision to reply to Kenneth and the list in this manner. Are you justified in
doing so?

Exactly.
