No, they're not(objects in the rear view mirror may appear closer than they
are..;-).

That's IMHO an illusion, evoked by apps (& the Find result window!)
generally occupying all of the screen.

There are several ways around this:

1) Start the missing app again (via Extras or whatever), it should come up
in the state you left it in.
