This is not really true.

Every ethernet card manufactured has its own unique MAC (media access
control) address/number burned into it and its unchangeable. That is
what the EA (ethernet address) number is.

The card will be assigned an IP address by DHCP when you connect.

If DHCP isn't working for you, then there is a problem in your config
or the setup of the switch your LAN uses cause it works just fine for
us here @ LSI Logic.

Make sure your in fact running a DHCP server and that the switch passes
DHCP packets. I know (from personal experience) that Cisco IOS switches
need to have something specifically turned on to enable that. Talk
to the folks who configured the switch parameters.
