NTLK NCU problems

I'm in trouble.
I've been having difficulty doing backups because my Mac (Powerbook 2400 G3
240) was freezing up half way through. Even attempting to do a backup with
extensions off I ended up with the same problem. After many restarts of my
Mac, trashing the NCU preferences, zapping my Mac's PRAM, rebuilding the
desktop, reinstalling NCU version 1.0, my Newton 2000 now tells me that it
"cannot connect with this version of the desktop application" (NCU version
1.0). I've tried both AppleTalk and serial connections with no success. I've
moved all my personal data to a RAM card and erased the Newton completely.
NCU will still not establish a connection, although it will find my Mac on
an AppleTalk network. I just found an old copy of Newton Backup Utilities
version 1.0 and the connection with this software is fine.
I have sucessfully backed up in the past with these same system
configurations. The only change has been some software added to the Newton
but it now contains no software that is not built in and the problems
remain.

Hardware:
Powerbook 2400 G3 240 upgrade running OS 9
Newton 2000 ROM version 2.1 (717260)-1
serial cable

Software:
Newton Connection Utilities 1.0
Newton Backup Utilities 1.0

Any suggestions will be gratefully attempted.
Thanks for your help.

Paul
