modem speed could be a problem, though I'd still expect something, albeit
slowly.

did you enter a complete URL (i.e., starting with http://) ?

did you "turn down" the bottom triangle on Newt's Cape's interface to
reveal status&error info.
that way you'd see login, connection, transfer and parsing info.

have you used NIE to connect with other apps (e.g. an email client)?

which version of Newt's Cape are you using?
