Sorry to hear about your iPod touch woes. I don't have one so can't comment but hope someone else here can.

But I did have a working 'original' iPod 10GB until a couple of months ago (busted it trying to put a newer battery in - waah!), and that still synced no problem with the last iTunes update  (don't know about the iOS 5 updated version that came out last week). Not bad for a 2002-ish device!
