Andy,
I had a similar problem with my SE recently. After I got the question mark
on floppy icon, when I put my startup floppy in it spit it back out. Later
realized I had to put the startup floppy in just after I started it, without
waiting for the floppy/question mark. Then it would start off the floppy no
problem.
Believe my problem may be hard disk stiction (roughly the heads getting
stuck to the surface of the hard disk.) Looking for my LONG allen head
screwdriver.
Good luck, HTH (this was my first mac, too)
Bill
