Heap is your 'system memory'. You get about 4mg on a 2100, an
upgraded 2000 or an upgraded eMate. This is all you get and flash
cards do not increase it.
All installed extensions, applications and I think data use some
amount of heap. Frozen applications do not use as much if any, and
running applications use more.
And then some seems to just get lost and reappears after resetting
the Newt or running one of the heap fixer applications.

Avi's backdrop, dashboard and other utilities monitor the available
heap, I like to stay at 300k or better when possible.
