I would agree that serial is a must, at the most basic level, but I
believe that with the way technologies are headed TCP/IP and possibly
BlueTooth are going to be required going forward. Serial is
nonexistant on Macs produced since 1998 (except for a choice few such
as the PowerBook G3 Wallstreet) and many who are using PCs have
experienced the problems with modern versions of Windows and needing
to slow down the serial ports.

Also, with Paul working on Einstein, whatever devices end up
supported will definitely be communicating via TCP/IP or BlueTooth.

There's not much point in putting the effort into reworking the
software if it's not going to be usable in the future. Of course,
getting what's working now stable is the first step.
