I knew about the possible port blocking and am using 587. I seem to
recall from Mail.app setup that there's also another port but AFAIK
that's to do with SSL stuff.

Yep!

And I just re-checked my smtp.mac.com send from Mail.app (using 587)
- works fine. There was something on Apple support pages that said
that the "from" address must be one's dotmac address - but where's
that setting on the Newt?
