This isn't a great idea since tar doesn't preserve resource forks. The
command ditto does though and is recommended by the CCC creator. I
think CCC is just a gui for ditto if I read

correctly. There are tips on this page on what you can selectively
leave out of a backup, using ditto. This is how I backed up my machine
recently to a firewire drive. It just copies the files there though, so
if you want an image you can copy around I'd suggest just making them
with Disk Utility (although it can't create an image of the system disk
while in use.)
