Since Matt started the OSX methods discussion, I would like to add
that I love the incomparable Blunt which adds bluetooth support to the
Newton, so that I can wirelessly install packages and also transfer
files (like .txt) to the Newt using the OSX program Bluetooth FIle
Exchange which is in your Utilities folder.

You can also use this to go online via an internet connected PC or Mac
with bluetooth that is setup to reshare it's access. Connecting via a
Bluetooth cellular phone is also possible, although it's unreliable
with my phones (SOny Ericsson) due the lack of an NIE option for
turning off echo packets...

If you are set on using classic, then Netwon Connection Utilities is
the way to go, and there have been several discussions about how to
get that working with OSX. If possible Locate the classic system on a
seperate drive or partition from the OSX system and try installing NCU
there. Also you can use the "repair permissions" option from the Disk
Utility (10.3) which may help prior to installation.

Hope this helps,
marty
