Hi All,

Thanks again for the very useful information. I feel I'm learning a
lot about networking as well as the eMate in trying to get this to
work!

So, having got the eMate to see the iBook once when it was connected
directly to the Ethernet port on the computer, I have followed the
advice to try connecting both the iBook and the eMate to my router with
direct cable connections, rather than having the iBook connected via
wifi.

Having dug out a long ethernet cable, the iBook has connected to the
router with no problems, and I am able to access the internet. I have
then gone through the process of trying to get the two computers to
talk to each other. Sadly, this has given me only the same results
that I've had before. When searching for another Mac OS computer, the
operation times out and the choose wants to close down to save battery
life. When I click 'Connect to iBook' (using the name it picked up the
one time it did find the other computer) it times out and reports that
the 'iBook can't be found on the network'. Curiously, during both of
these operations, the light on the network adapter cable is off,
although it does come on briefly after the time out errors. Do you
think this could be the problem?

As it doesn't work when connecting directly to the Mac either, do you
think this would be any different if I were to use OS9? At the moment
I don't have classic installed. Can this be done without destroying
the OS X installation? I had wanted to avoid using classic, as I don't
have that much disk space on my computer.

Where should I go from here? Would all these problems be solved by the
TCP/IP extensions to the Dock?

Once again, thanks for your help.

Best Wishes,

Richard
