HTML is a pain in many respects

        - if you don't use the exact same email program that has the same html
engine (they are all subtly different and buggy)
        - if you happen to be visually challenged and have your emails read to
you. I'm told HTML sounds like crap by my blind computer programmer
friend
        - if you just don't want the gif's and everything else that goes along
with such fat emails
        
A lot of mailings lists ask people to send text only
