That's always been my impression. OpenSSL is (as the name implies)
open source, and it has been ported to the Palm, so it can certainly
run just fine on small hardware. As an example application, the
open-source Palm password-keeper appliction, Keyring, uses OpenSSL for
the crypto routines.

I'm sure the Newton programming gurus can pipe up on what specific
architectural difficulties there are in making such a library.
