From what you describe I doubt that there's a problem with the
battery contacts, although of course nothing is impossible. There
is a remote chance that the system patch has been corrupted. You
can force the Newton to go back to factory settings by switching
it on with a different ROM, either from a 2x00 with a different OS
language or from an eMate. This has fixed some weird and unexplainable
behavior not only for me, but also for others. If you want and are
willing to risk the shipping cost, I could send you an eMate ROM to
try this out with.

This is not possible. Installed system patches aren't reset by a
hard reset. The only way to do this is doing what I described
above.
