OK,
I am feeling a little thick.

I manage to connect to my Newton from my TiBook just fine, but if I
try to do anything useful, like install a package for instance, it all
just hangs. I have used packager to fix the packages and I am using
Escale over an AppleTalk connection.

What else do I need to be doing in order to get this to work?
