You could try a modem to modem connection. Look here:

Haven't tried it myself, but it's yet another way around the
bootstrapping problem. There's also a card-lending service a few people
on this list are running. They'll loan you a card with ethernet drivers
installed. However the easiest way might be to hook up with a local
Newton user who can get you going.
