Since you have the back of the case off, you will have the battery out
in a second...

Have a look here:

Scroll down until you see the picture with screw 9. Remove it. The
screw, of course, you’ll have a hard time removing any pictrue from
my web site.
With the Newton in front of you as shown in the image, push the black part
that covers the battery to the left and tilt its right edge upwwards.
You should now be able to take the battery out. I’d bet that either
the eject mechanism in the part you just tilted upwards is broken or
the eject spring (you will see it in front of you, the others will see
it if they scroll two pictures down) has a problem.
It the eject mechanism is the problem, let me know. I can send you
one for 8 bucks plus shipping, or for a donation of at least 5 USD
to NewtonTalk or the Worldwide Newton Association.
