I think that with the latest versions of OS X, the AppleTalk connection in
Classic will be turned off is there is no activity. Doing the 'connect to
other computer' and launching NCU must generate some requests to turn on
AppleTalk again, or something like that. I don't have, obviously, any hard
evidence about that, but I think I've read something to this effect
somewhere. The thing is I don't have those problems when I run NCU in
Classic on my Pismo running 10.2.3...
