I take issue with the last sentence on the following grounds (plus more tha=
t
I cant think of right now):

1. Web 'forums' are abysmally slow when used on 22.4k dial up connections,
worse on my 14.4 cell phone. No DSL, no ISDN, no Cable Modem (no cable,
period) out where I live, and cant afford $100 a month plus a WinTel server
for satellite. They are workable if I want to tie up my phone for an hour
or two, and then mark the rest read....
2. No way to use the web forum 'offline'. Email allows it natively with
many different broswer/readers available.
3. Web forums on the newton do not show up properly and strike out on point=
s
1 & 2. Additionally, Newtscape isnt the most robust when going to a new
page, and cant take them with you offline for replying and such.

Email is, and will always be the lowest common denominator to reach ALL
audiences. I often read and reply to all my email on my Newton. I use my
newton extensively on duty taking accident notes, arrest notes, and also
reading email and news on meal breaks. At home it is difficult to keep my
computer online all the time either to 'interact' with some site, other
people want to use the phone to call me too (fianc=E9e hates calling my cell
because of poor coverage, SAR is another example of groups that need to
reach me).=20

I will also suggest that you try your email programs filters and send
everything off to a new folder. If you sort it by subject, you get a close
representation to what you'd find on usenet. If you want forums, look at
the comp.newton hierarchy, they are pretty lifeless though, I don=B9t know
about the new MacAddict forum.

FWIW, if you look in the archives, this topic has been beaten to death
multiple times in the last year+, it comes up every other month from someon=
e
new to the list.

I suppose all we can hope for is for eCartis to develop a 'web based' list
add-on for those that desire forums. Then we can have a special collection
from those who see the value of such. Personally, I don=B9t. A lot of us ar=
e
in positions to no longer be a part of this community if the lowest common
denominator is left for something upgraded. Leaving the lowest common
denominator for a proprietary web forum leaves many on the same plight as
your problems with email volume. However you have ways to deal with the
volume (filters & folders), with web forums you leave a lot of us out of th=
e
picture entirely.

I do hope that you are able to find a communications medium that lets you
derive satisfaction in owning and using your Newton.

That=B9s my story, and I'm sticking to it.
