Of course you can put NiMH batteries in your MP120 and you can also charge
them within the Newt. I did this for a long time without having any problem.

LiIons have a totally different technology and require highly sophisticated
charging which the Newt of course cannot provide. Despite that LiIons have a
different voltage per cell, typically something around 3V (1.2 V for NiCd
and NiMH).

You can refurbish your NiCd battery pack by carefully removing the outer
metallic shell from and put NiMHs instead.
I had quiet good performance with 1500 mAh cells, but nowadays you can even
get 2000 mAh and more.
