If you've got at least the 717245 or higher (717260, 710031) patch
installed, you can recentre the contrast slider by double-tapping on the
Contrast text below the slider and responding to the dialog.

That's a normal noise made by the flyback transformer that powers the
backlight. Some people can hear it, some can't.
