Thanks for the response Jeremy. I'm using a polarity tester too - good
investment for the road warrior kit. The Linestein, or comparable unit
would be helpful for my typical meeting, or day at the
office...sending/receiving faxes, email on the Newt or laptop, or moving the
"Polycom Darth Vader phone" to another office for a conference call. I've
had a large number of instances where such a device would have expedited an
issue during a meeting, or helped bypass a hotel telecom limitation. For
these reasons, I think I can justify the expense - just hoping there was a
cheaper solution....

The WiFi sure would be nice too. Although we have our office set up for
WiFi, our IT person was more than a bit restrictive about using personal
hardware/software to conduct business. Now that he is gone, I'm hoping that
his replacement will be more open to individual needs, afterall, the Newt is
primarily credited for my productivity and time management. If all goes
well, then I might be able to justify the WiFi card too...just don't have
the home system running wireless yet, and the only service in Phoenix AFAIK
is Boingo - for which I know nothing about Newton compatibility.

-----Original Message----- I have not yet attempted to use a Linestein, mostly because I don't want to spend that much money.

I carry around one of the inexpensive Radio Shack phone line polarity checkers that shows green if plugged into an analog line with correct polarity, red if analog with reversed polarity, and no illumination when plugged into a digital line. I always test with this before inserting my cord into a strange socket.

Part of my "road warrior" kit.

Of course, this doesn't help if there's no analog line around, which is where Linestein would come in handy. Although, un-WEP'ed WiFi networks seem to be more popular every day in the same natural habitats that digital phone systems favor. Just today I was sitting in a strange office waiting for a meeting to start and just for giggles I tried connecting my Wifi-enabled Newt with the SSID set to blank and WEP unchecked -- to my delight, I was served an IP address and got a live connection. And on my recent trip to Italy, I was stunned to see that my hotel had a free Wifi network for guests' use! I had gone to great pains to ensure I had a Worldcom dialup with a local number in the town I was staying in (Conegliano) and had packed my analog modem, Italian phone adapter, and a reel of RJ11. Naturally I had left my Wifi card at home, not dreaming that the hotel in this quaint little Italian town would be Wifi-enabled!
