[NTLK] [OT] Remote Controls

Last week there was a thread and some recommendations about universal
remotes. I recently bought a 11-year old laserdisc player (for content
which has not been released on DVD) on eBay which did not come with its
remote. I have a pretty old RCA Systemlink universal remote which learns
a new component by inputting a code from the manual or, if it's not in
the manual, by cycling through possible codes and finding one that works
the component. It doesn't work all the well with some components, the LD
being one of them. Is this how the new universal remotes learn to
control components, or has someone come up with a better system? Also,
has anyone had experience using a new remote (like the Sony that was
recommended) on ancient a/v devices? Thanks.
