Perhaps it is because you are using an ADSL.

Do you have a line filter installed between the Newt and the wall jack?

Subject: [NTLK] Apple Newton Modem and MP120

Hello,

I've just won a MP120 on eBay, and it came with Apple Newton Modem
(2400bps, woohoo!) I'm now trying to get it to dial a number for a start
(eventually I hope to be able to pick up my email), without any success.
The setup is: a UK BT ADSL-enhanced phone line, Calls application. When
I place a call, I can hear the modem making very silent noices ("lifting
the handset"), then it seems as if it starts picking up a radio
transmission of some sort, and no dial tone at all. It tone-dials the
number, but the transmission stays, and that's all. Is there any hope
for me, or shoud I start looking for a compatible PC Card modem?

Thanks.
