I'm thinking that my new 2100's backlight will be usable for at least a
couple of years to come (it's fairly bright now) so, if nothing else, I can
find another 2100 later or just switch to the latest and greatest handheld
device du jour.

I'd say why wait--use your newt like you like it...full-speed ahead!
