I don't know anyone who has serial (all my friends are PC users, what's
that say about me?), and I don't even have a serial cable or dongle.
Trust me, I'm really not trying to be difficult here. :-) It just
seems like I'm doomed. :-)

Sorry?
You do not need to install NCU on your Newt at all!
NCU is the application supposed to be running on the Mac/PC side.

To connect via ethernet is what I would recommend as well, but you are
still
trapped getting the appropriate drivers onto the Newt...

What I would recommend is - Put all the software needed (NCU and the
ethernet drivers for the Newt, not to forget the NIE package) onto a CD,
take your Newt, the dongle and the serial cable and go and visit a
friend or
collegue who has a computer with a serial interface...
Thats probably the easiest thing you can do.

Having the Ethernet drivers and NIE installed on the Newt once, you may
not
need the help of your friend anymore, providing that you keep a safe
backup
on a PCMCIA card from that you can reinstall the Ethernet driver and NIE
at
any time in order to get back access to your computer.

Do not try to write on the Flash card having it installed in another
computer. This will destroy all the previous stored data from the Newt
(formatting is required) and on the way back the PC data are not
readable
for the Newt as well.
