My 2000 Passat 1.8L Turbo has 200hp and z-rated tired (Dunlop SP5000). What I
don't have are roads I can go that fast on! (In the US) ;-)
BTW, this same engine can push 300hp with a new exhaust, larger turbo, and
injectors. Not bad for a 1.8 liter displacement.
Not to say that displacement doesn't matter but I have more get-up-and-go in
my 1.8T than most V6's with larger displacements. IMO it is a matter of
efficiency.
