You need to reset the Newton, by pushing the little button on the back.
Right after you do that, take your stylus, and press it down on the left
edge (maybe between 1/8 to 1/4 of an inch in from the edge) and half-way
down from the top. Press the stylus down until you get a message asking if
you want to activate packages on the internal store. Tap "No" and hold the
stylus down again firmly, until a message pops up, asking the same thing for
the card. Again don't activate packages. Now, you should be able to delete
the package.
I seem to remember doing this on a 1.3 Newton.
