did it happen today? ;-)

sounds ok to me. phase 2 should be correct.

there's a newton app called 'NetNames' or 'NetNames Lite', produced by
Photonics for debugging their infrared appletalk networking gear. it
should be on UNNA. using that, you can scan an appletalk network,
looking for devices. might help?

Andy> Could the Redhat box and TCP/IP somehow 'block' Ethertalk ?

nope. not if the printer and the newton are plugged into the same hub.

Andy> BTW ........thanks for the netatalk link David !

easy. netatalk also includes a utility called nbplookup, i think.
does similar things to NetNames, but is a little harder to use.

does your hub have activity lights? you should see a periodic flash
(mine was approximately every 2 seconds) as the newt broadcasts the
lookup packet.

you could also use tcpdump on the Redhat box: try "tcpdump -vvX"
(you'll need to be logged in as root). this gave me packets like

    15:07:21.372295 snap 8:0:7:80:9b et1 255.0.191.129 > 0.0.nis:
    nbp-lkup 1: "=:LaserWriter@*"

    0x0000 aaaa 0308 0007 809b 0024 0000 0000 ff00 .........$......
    0x0010 ffbf 0281 0221 01ff 00bf 8100 013d 0b4c .....!.......=.L
    0x0020 6173 6572 5772 6974 6572 012a 0000 aserWriter.*..

if you don't see lights and/or such packets, something's misconfigured
or broken on the newton. if you do, and see no responses, the problem
is with the printer.

it's possible that the printer is not advertising itself as a
"LaserWriter", but just as a HP-thing. maybe you need the 'M' variant
to get the postscript support that is implicit in LaserWriter?

if so, netatalk and a ghostscript filter to convert postscript to
HP-printer-speak is perhaps the best route.

hope this helps,

d
