Hi Matt,
I have been using my Qualcomm (Kyocera) 860 thinphone for some time with my
UMP2000. Works great. Have used it in two ways 1. with the Qualcomm Data on
the Go modem. I don't believe there is a cable for the later phones you
mentioned for this modem. You do need the Newton driver from Kyocera
downloadable from their website and 2. as a modem using a somewhat cumbersome
cable system (Kyocera phone data cable, null modem adapter, gender changer,
Newton PC serial cable, dongle). It works very well also. You need to write a
driver using the Newton Modem Modifier program. I have the setup string for
the 860. Maybe it would work with their other phones as well. The cabling
should be the same except for the data cable being specific to the phone you
buy. I even use the latter (phone-as-modem) setup to connect to Verizon's
Mobile Office which allows you Internet access without a separate ISP in
their digital service areas. Don't know if you company supports something
like that. Otherwise you would need to find an ISP to connect to that is
Newton friendly.
The QCP-860 is still a current phone on the Kyocera website and still a very
nice phone. If you need specifics on the Modem Modifier setup data let me
know.
Took me a long time to make this work with some invaluable help from
Newtontalk folks. Good luck on your quest.
Myron
