I think the file is screwed.

This is a strange MS bug/feature. I'm sure its Outlook
(maybe Outlook Express too). Seems to bizarrely encode attachments
so no one can do anything with them. Ask to have the file zipped
and resent and my guess is you'll get it ok.

<rant>
This .dat annoyance is almost as annoying as the whole .vcf thing
and .sigs over 4 lines and html in email
