Why grasshopper? does it imply someone who jumps from one thing to another
without sticking to one thing? Or some other kind of code. Just curious.

It refers to the '70s show "Kung Fu" starring David Carradine. He was a loner who traveled around helping people, and often had flashbacks to his youth. His mentor (a blind old wise man) always called him "Grasshopper" (best said with fake Chinese accent) when imparting some nugget of wisdom upon him.

Hmmm. Thinking about it, I can now see that "The Pretender" is a combination of "The fugitive", "Kung Fu", and "Gilligan's Island".
