I'm not the battery expert here, but I don't think that this caused the
battery to become bad. I think the battery has been in the eMate since
the original owner had it, and it's now getting to its end of life,
unfortunately. Now, if the original poster can have the USPS pays for
it, I would say go for it!

BTW, I've received numerous packages through FedEx and UPS that required
signature but they were also left on the porch, so I don't think that
this behavior is specific to the USPS...
