That should not be the problem. I have the accelerator and battery drain is not that much different. Did you check your sleep settings? Backlight off time? Don't forget the Newt wakes up at 3.00 am to rollover to dos. Sorry if this is answered but I just noticed your queries.

What is the condition of your batteries? Try a set of fresh alkalines and see how long they last. That may give you a clue.
