Ben thanks for the insight. I am not entirely sure that the bay doesn't
work. When I click on the "Card"icon in the extras, it says no card in
inserted. That makes me wonder if the pcmcia slot works or not. As far as
I know the card hasn't been upgraded. I would love to be able to make it
work. I will try to see if the card works, if so then it is the slot. Did
you need a driver to use your card. What were your settings, in the modem
control panel.

I used this modem successfully in a 120, just for the record. still use it
in my 2000u.
I used it with the "28.8 and faster setting" and it worked about as well as
a modem can on a 120.
the modem itself may be bad, as I have heard of them ceasing to work
occasionally, have you tried it in a notebook or another newton? sometimes
if you try to install the v.34 upgrade it will corrupt and the modem will
become unusable. you can try and reload this, I found it on the www.mhz.com
site, I forget where, try searching for xj4288
