I used this modem successfully in a 120, just for the record. still use it
in my 2000u.

I used it with the "28.8 and faster setting" and it worked about as well as
a modem can on a 120.

the modem itself may be bad, as I have heard of them ceasing to work
occasionally, have you tried it in a notebook or another newton? sometimes
if you try to install the v.34 upgrade it will corrupt and the modem will
become unusable. you can try and reload this, I found it on the www.mhz.com
site, I forget where, try searching for xj4288
